This September, Stage Two at Norwich Theatre Royal will host a blend of theatre, food and technology in the form of Gastronomic, a brand new production from Norwich-based curious directive. We’re pretty excited about it, to be honest.
As ambitious as it is creative, Gastronomic will be intimate and immersive, with just 40 audience members per performance. The audience will find themselves transported on board an Airbus A380 on a long-haul flight, with three chefs delivering a five-course tasting menu throughout the ‘flight’. The food will arrive, accompanied by individual in-flight screens and the stories about how and why these chefs came to be there.
Five Norwich Restaurants will be creating the taster menu: Benedicts, Shiki, Namaste Village, the Assembly House and Kemp’s at Norwich Theatre Royal.
The idea came to Jack Lowe, part of the devising team and founder of curious directive, after watching an online course that explored the relationship between food, conversation and emotion.
“Food becomes the soundtrack to some of the most important conversations imaginable”, he says. “Chefs believe good food can change the world so we are making a play about that belief, using storytelling and technology to create a new form of show.”
Stephen Crocker, Chief Executive of Norwich Theatre Royal said “We want to create extraordinary experiences. The art and the culture of a place, and also the food and the culture of serving food in a place starts to define a place. Using technology and the creative culinary flair of some of Norwich’s top chefs, mixed with curious directive’s storytelling skill will mean the birth of a unique and exciting performance that showcases the very best of Norwich.”
Gastronomic is a commission by curious directive, Norwich Theatre Royal and Shoreditch Town Hall with support from the National Theatre Immersive storytelling Studio.
