The Guildhall: Steeped in Norwich Heritage
No visit to Norwich would be complete without a journey back in time to discover the area’s great and grisly history.
The Fine City’s stories echo throughout Norwich Guildhall, where criminals, martyrs and mayors have walked the halls during its 600 year history. As England’s largest and most elaborate medieval city hall outside of London, The Guildhall in Norwich has been home to shackled prisoners, civic assemblies, an armoury of pikes and muskets, and even the city fire engine. In its vaults lies the body of Martha Sheward, victim of a Victorian murder mystery, while England’s first Protestant martyr, Thomas Bilney, spent the night before his execution in the Undercroft. The police cells beneath were in use up to 1985 and still bear their occupants’ graffiti.
