English Whisky at St George’s Distillery

The first whisky distillery in England, St. George’s Distillery became operational in December 2006 and is a big part of Norfolk’s heritage.

Though whisky production stopped in England over 100 years ago, the barley grown in Norfolk and the Breckland water are perfect for producing excellent quality whisky. Forsyths of Rothes, who have been servicing the whisky industry since the late 1800’s, built the equipment in the distillery, including the beautiful copper stills. St. George’s was also fortunate enough to have award-winning master distiller Iain Henderson – formerly Manager at the Laphroaig Distillery and who has assisted in the set up of several successful distilleries – overseeing the initial production.

The first batch of whisky was bottled in December 2009, and during 2010 the distillery bottled an exclusive peaty number that was specially distilled by Iain.

Today, the distillery releases its drinks under two brands. ‘The English’ is a range of single malt whiskies and ‘The Norfolk’ consists of grain whiskies and liqueurs.

St George’s Distillery is a unique venue for your conference or function, with plenty of parking and easy access off the A11. St. George’s Distillery can arrange catering, games on the lawn, private group tours and educational tasting sessions to complete your day. They can accommodate 63 delegates in their conference room, which has a viewing gallery window through to the distilling floor.

Tours of the distillery offer the chance to see how the striking copper stills produce the clear, sweet spirit that is then stored in casks for at least three years before being bottled.

The distillery and visitor centre lie just off the A11 at Roudham amongst a grove of cricket bat willows. In addition to the fascinating distillery and shop (200 different whiskies and a wonderful selection of gift ideas), is ‘The Kitchen’ serving food all day from 9am to 4:15pm. Enjoy the wonderful surroundings with the option of breakfast, brunch, lunch or just coffee or a slice of homemade cake.

Admission to the distillery, shop & The Kitchen is FREE.

Coach parties welcome by appointment. Ample parking available.
