St. George’s Theatre: High quality entertainment in Yarmouth.
St George’s theatre is just a short walk from Great Yarmouth town centre and the sea front, set in a stunningly refurbished Grade 1 listed building. Originally constructed in 1721, the chapel is recognised as one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in the country.
St George’s is open all year round and hosts an exciting and diverse programme of events, including drama, live music, children’s shows, comedy, cabaret, youth theatre and community group performances.
The chapel was deconsecrated in 1959 and threatened with demolition until a dedicated group of locals campaigned to establish a centre for the arts. The Masquers amateur dramatic society operated a popular theatre from the 1970s right up until 2006. In 2006 the theatre was forced to close while funding was sought to once again save this magnificent local landmark from severe structural defects. Works began in 2010 and wonderfully the theatre reopened in 2012, alongside an eye-catching new café and outdoor performance space.
St George’s has brought high quality entertainment to Great Yarmouth ever since, providing opportunities for local people of all ages to engage with the arts. St George’s 2020 pantomime ‘Rapunzel’ was live streamed to more than 200,000 children across the UK and was applauded for bringing cheer to a difficult Christmas. They now offer a wide variety of shows, courses and other live events.
