Following their multi-award winning production of Into The Woods and their recent win at the Norfolk Arts Awards, Norwich Playhouse once again plays host to the local theatre company Sound Ideas this December from the 12th to 16th. Little Shop of Horrors is the latest exciting, ambitious and electric production from this ambitious local group.
Formed in 2013, as part of the Norwich Fringe Festival, when five theatre nuts with an obsession for obscure theatre crowded around a piano in their friend’s garage; this talented company has grown from successful bar shows to several critically acclaimed, and award-winning full-scale productions.
Last year they pulled off a coup when they staged the regional premiere of oddball toilet-themed hit Broadway cult musical Urinetown. They followed that up with an equally ambitious Christmas production of Stephen Sondheim’s dark spin on fairytales, Into The Woods. This year began with their biggest challenge to date, an immersive and site-specific production of the dark tale of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and most recently, their professional debut with the out-of-town premier of USHERS: The Front of House Musical!
Now comes Little Shop of Horrors – On the twenty-first day of the month of September, in an early year of a decade not too long before our own, the human race suddenly encountered a deadly threat to its very existence. Little Shop of Horrors tells the story of the well-meaning florist Seymour Krelborn and his wisecracking plant, Audrey II. Seymour delights in the attention his leafy friend attracts, but when Audrey II develops a carnivorous craving for human flesh, the situation begins to spin out of control.
Featuring dazzling puppetry direct from the recent UK tour and a sparkling score from the legendary Alan Menken, (best known for his numerous Walt Disney film scores) Little Shop of Horrors is one of the longest running off-Broadway shows and popular cult films of all time.
Little Shop of Horrors is being staged at Norwich Playhouse from December 12th-16th. 7.30pm nightly (additional matinee on 16th at 2:30pm), tickets £18-20, booking via norwichplayhouse.co.uk or on 01603 598598.
