The Gardeners Arms Free House

There are many reasons to visit The Gardeners Arms Free House pub (most commonly known as The Murderers) on Timberhill in Norwich.

For one, it has a rich (and, in some parts, dark) heritage; dating back to 1530, it is classed among one of the 100 most historic pubs in Britain. Still delightfully traditional in layout and atmosphere, there is no shortage of nooks and crannies, and the focus is very much on excellent home cooked food and great beer.

Second, for beer lovers and real ale fans, The Gardeners Arms features 9 real ales and around 11-18 cask ales each week. See what’s currently in there cellar. It is a regular in the Good Beer Guide and holds it’s own Bi-Annual Beer Festival.  If you have trouble deciding on which ale to try, experience The Murderers Beer Tapas!  Select three different cask ales and these are served in 1/3 pint glasses in beer tapas paddles for £3.80 – perfect!

Third, for sports fans, The Murderers received the accolade of being the best sports bar in East Anglia in the 2012 Great British Pub Awards and were once again finalists in 2013. With Sky Sports, numerous screens (some even in the toilets) and if England are playing a sporting event it will be shown here, need we say more?

Fourthly, if you like live music head to The Murderers on a Thursday (Blues) or Friday (selection of great live acts) night.

Finally, if you’re in a more café-culture mood, then the adjoining Murderers Café-Bar offers a comprehensive menu of delicious lunches, meals and hot beverages.

Returning to that ‘dark past’, why is it widely known as ‘The Murderers’? As the blue plaque inside (one of only a few ‘inside’ blue plaques to be found, apparently) explains, in 1895 Frank Miles murdered his estranged wife, Mildred – the landlady’s daughter, in the very same doorway that still exists today. Check out the history of the pub.
