Last day of the Summer term and a gloriously sunny day in Norwich. What better start to the Summer Holidays than a family meal in the open air at giraffe restaurant in Norwich?
Now, we dine at giraffe a few times a year, so are pretty familiar with it’s cuisine. We like it. It’s tasty, always presented beautifully and of a reassuringly good quality. Inside is clean and the staff are efficient and friendly. It’s a good place to take small children.
This particular Wednesday was the first time we’d ever sat outside at giraffe. It was a nice change. A high, thick hedge shelters you from the passing shoppers en-route to intu Chapelfield and it was definitely warm enough to dine al fresco. It felt very secluded and summery. Nice.
Our Waitress must have had Jedi mind skills or similar, because after she recommended a couple of dishes form the menu (one was veggie before I’d even said anything about my being a vegetarian – incredible!), it was impossible not to choose them.
Hence I had the Felafel, Feta & Roasted Red Pepper Quesadilla and my Other Half (OH) had the “Penang-Bang” Chicken Salad. My dish was actually from the ‘Lunch For Less’ selection (a main course lunch for £6.75, Mon-Fri 12-5pm – amazing!). Both dishes looked and tasted great.
Sweet Potato Fries on the side were utterly scrumptious.
To drink we had copious amounts of iced water, rose by the glass and a Sunshine Coast Iced Tea (Ice cold chamomile and green tea with mango, lime and fresh mint…mmmmmmmmm).
Little Man had a Herby Pork Sausage, Beans and Mash from the Children’s Menu, accompanied by Pomegranate Juice.
The waiting staff were lovely throughout, always interacting with Little Man (who was very happy with a balloon, plastic giraffes from his drinks and an activity sheet to tackle) and answering any questions we had about the menu or the restaurant.
When the time came for dessert, I was actually too full to be tempted (though there were some fabulous sounding options). Naturally, this did not stop me diving into OH’s Apple & Red Cherry Crumble (oh the cheek of me!). Served warm in an ideal-for-sharing portion size, it was oaty and fruity and wholesome and delicious. Like if The Waltons made you a pudding.
Little Man had a bowl of fresh fruit to finish. Lovely. And healthy too. Win all round.
Discussing with OH afterwards, the standout ‘thing’ about giraffe for us is the fact that the food encompasses so many wonderful, fresh flavours. Even when you’re tucking in to a generous portion of quesadilla, it feels ‘healthy’ rather than ‘stodgy’, and satisfying all the same.
Portion sizes at giraffe are liberal (I almost always end up feeling full – possibly because the menu sounds too delicious and I always order loads!), but I never feel like I’ve over-indulged in a negative way. It’s all good quality food.
Giraffe is a relaxed and friendly experience, with menus that offer an interesting variety of dishes. It’s a good option whether you’re dining as a couple, with kids or as a group for a celebration.
Worth a visit if you haven’t been already.
